One of the first places related to the Deaf Community that we found in Vietnam, was a Deaf Restaurant in Hue; a small city above Da Nang.
After our first meeting with the Vietnamese Deaf community in Hoi an, we were both ready for our next adventure!
Mr. Lac Thanh is a Deaf man really famous in this small city. His restaurant was that popular, that his competitors opened other similar restaurants called “Lac Thenh” and “Lac Thunh”, making almost impossible for tourists to find the right one.
Some reviewers even mentioned that the other restaurants were pretending to have Deaf staff, and this made everything worse for the original Lac Thanh.
However, after meeting Mr. Lac, I can be sure that the competition simply made him stronger, and he created a unique experience for his customers.

When we arrived, Mr. Lac was watching around and, as soon as he noticed us, he started gesturing that it was time to eat!
The situation itself was so funny, as I had no idea Mr. Lac was that easy-going! He was making a show and I couldn’t stop laughing!
Finally, we were able to make our orders, and Mr. Lac immediately started to work. The kitchen was just next to us, and we could see him having fun while cooking.
Everything he cooked, was homemade and so fresh. Mr. Lac prepared our spring rolls one by one, sat on a table behind us.
It felt to be at a friend’s place, rather than in a restaurant, and we loved the feeling!
As we were having our dinner, Mr. Lac sat next to us and showed us a book he used to communicate with people. On a random page, he tried to guess our nationality. We wrote our country of origin, Italy, in the same book and he made a surprised face.
The thing about Mr. Lac is his energy. He always has a big bright smile and he’s able to communicate with everyone.
His restaurant started as a small business, and it still has that family atmosphere. Later on, he started to organize half-day city tours with scooters, and he keeps his reviews on small books.
As you could tell, everyone was really satisfied with the tour, the Deaf restaurant in Hue and Mr. Lac himself. He has hundreds of reviews from people all over the world.
“Mr. Lac, do you use Sign Language?”
I wanted to ask this hilarious man loads of questions, but actually, I never had the time, as he was always finding new ways to make us laugh.
Finally, I was able to ask something, but it turned out Mr. Lac didn’t use Sign Language. I was wondering why, and how he was able to communicate with his family or customers, but I had no chance to directly ask him.
Despite this, he had many friends coming over just to say hi or have a quick conversation, and he was able to understand each one of them. It was pretty incredible!
Mr. Lac was able to transform Deafness in his own strength.
You can see how happy he is, always smiling and full of energy. He can easily explain the hardest concept, and you’ll get it. His way of interacting with customers is amazing and you’d want to spend the whole evening with him.
At the end of the night, we received two bottle openers in wood as a present, and he showed us how to use them.
Obviously, we were so satisfied with the whole evening and decided to leave a review in his small book.
Mr. Lac was the happiest person ever, and the most authentic Deaf Restaurant in Hue we could possibly find.
